Athletic Court Designs That Complement Backyard Landscaping

Lawn care and maintenance is a popular hobby among Midwesterners, but not everyone enjoys mowing, weeding, edging, etc. There are plenty of ways to reduce your yardwork, and one popular way is to build an athletic court. Backyard game courts offer endless fun and fitness opportunities, host sports tournaments in your neighborhood, and improve your athletic skills.

An athletic court is a great way to fill up some space in your backyard, but it doesn’t have to completely replace any landscaping you’ve already installed and maintained. Your athletic court doesn’t have to be garish and brightly colored; with thoughtful design, it can be a beautiful and seamless part of your backyard landscaping and aesthetic.

With help from C&C Courts, we can help you design a classy game court that provides the benefits of sports at home while not interrupting the flow of your backyard.

Choosing the Right Location

One of the most important design decisions to make is where to put your game court. You will want to work with what you have, including your backyard’s topography and current landscaping. If you have a natural slope, for example, that might be the perfect place for a court with a terrace retaining wall or seating area.

You can also consider making your athletic court a “destination” by creating a winding pathway through the garden to reach it. That way, your court is somewhat hidden at first glance, if you’re looking to preserve your view.

Blending With Your Color Palette

Athletic court surface materials come in a wide variety of colors, so you can blend your court with the siding, trim, and roofing colors of your home. You can also choose to have your court match your landscaping, such as choosing green, gray, or brown surface materials.

If you want a more vibrant feel, choose a color that suits your palette, such as a rich blue that complements your green grass. The court lines also do not have to be white. You can choose a more subtle color to define boundaries without being overpowering.

Natural and Artificial Boundaries

Another aspect to consider is the transition from the court to the surrounding landscaping and yard. One option includes integrated retaining walls, which can double as functional seating areas

Native shrubs, tall grasses, or trees can create natural boundaries for the court and provide privacy and sound buffering. These can make your court look more beautiful as a natural, living border. In addition, choosing fencing that matches your home’s aesthetic and supplementing it with vines or other greenery will make your court area prettier.

Another natural boundary idea is to create a water feature. Whether this is a fountain at the head or a small stream that rings the court, water features can help your court blend seamlessly with the rest of your yard.

Accessories and Lighting

Choosing accessories, such as basketball hoops, multi-sport nets, rebounders, etc, will make your court more functional without being overly distracting to your yard’s aesthetic. Your lighting choices will also make a difference.

You can use subtle LED path lights to guide players to the court, and use your court pole lighting to illuminate the playing surface and surrounding area when the sun sets. If you create a deck, patio, or other seating area near the court, the lights will help illuminate that area so you can use it in the evening.
