Fun Games to Play On Your Backyard Ice Rink in Wisconsin
When the temperatures start to drop around October and November in Wisconsin, it’s time to break out the backyard ice rink! While simple skating is fun and hockey is a blast, changing up the game can add new levels of entertainment on your ice rink.
So, grab your skate, gather your friends and family, and try out these entertaining games that are perfect for your C&C Courts-built backyard ice rink!
Ice Hockey (Mini-Rink Style)
You don’t need a full-sized rink to play a thrilling game of hockey. If your rink is not already lined for hockey, use cones to mark the areas of play and ensure your goal is clearly marked. You can play either 2v2 or 3v3 to ensure everyone gets some play time.
If you have younger kids, consider using foam pucks or a tennis ball to make it safer and easier to control.
Red Light, Green Light on Skates
Red Light, Green Light is a classic playground game that can be adapted for an ice rink. When wearing skates or boots, this game turns into a delightful challenge.
To play, have one person designate the “caller” and stand at one end of the rink. Everyone else lines up at the opposite end. When the caller calls “Green Light,” the players skate forward.
When they yell “Red Light,” players must stop instantly. Losing balance and falling count as movements! The first person to tag the caller wins the round.
Backyard Ice Broomball
Broomball is a popular winter sport and a perfect low-contact option for all ages and skill levels. It’s often played in community leagues across Wisconsin, so playing at home is a great way to practice!
The equipment you need includes:
The object of the game is to hit the ball into the opponent’s net. The non-skating nature of this game makes it hilarious and challenging as everyone slides around the ice.
Shark and Minnows (Ice Edition)
Shark and Minnows is a thrilling game of tag that throws in the twist of being played on ice. It uses the entire rink surface for play.
Designate one or two players as the “sharks” in the center of the rink. Everyone else are “minnows” lined up at one end.
When the sharks call “Go!” the minnows try to skate across the rink without being tagged. If a minnow is tagged, they become a shark for the next round. The last minnow standing is the winner!
Pre-Game Safety Considerations
Before playing any game on your backyard ice rink, always ensure the ice is clear and safe. Fill any ridges or divots from previous skating sessions. Additionally, make sure everyone has proper winter wear, including hats, gloves, scarves, and coats. Take breaks as needed and stay hydrated!
