How to Design an Athletic Court for Multiple Sports

How to Design an Athletic Court for Multiple Sports

Do you dream of having your own multi-sport game court in your Wisconsin backyard, to play your favorite games and host tournaments and competitions with friends and family? Did you know that adding a game court to your home or backyard can also increase property values?

You’ve come to the right place. By working with C&C Courts, you can design and build a completely custom multi-sports game court, either indoor or outdoor. You will work with a team of seasoned professionals and use our awesome, interactive “Design a Court” feature.

You can design your dream athletic court and send it to our team, and we can help you bring it to life.

Indoor Court or Outdoor Court

You first need to decide whether you want an indoor or outdoor court. Indoor courts are great for year-round play, though they do require space in your home or garage, shed, basement, etc.

Outdoor courts are an option for backyards with enough space to accommodate a multi-sports game court. Even if you have a smaller backyard, a half-court can easily fit in your available space. Outdoor courts allow your family to reap the benefits of outdoor summer play, and you can use your court for an ice rink during the winter!

Once you’ve decided where to put your court, you will need measurements. Knowing the amount of space we can work with is important when designing your ideal court.

Hop on “Design a Court”

The best feature of our website is the “Design a Court” tool. Here, you can completely design and customize a court in 3D. This feature is the easiest way to get a visual idea of what your court will look like when it’s finished. You can customize the accessories and colors as well and add your own logo or decal.

For ease of use, we’ve put together a quick how-to guide to design a court.

Step 1: Select Your Court Location

The first thing you’ll see on this page is the choice between Outdoor and Indoor Courts. Choose which one you want to design.

Step 2: Select Court Type and Size

Since we’re building a multi-sport game court, choose that button, then decide how large or small your court can be based on available space. This is where your measurements come in handy.

Step 3: Design Everything

You will now see a 3-dimensional court on your screen. Using the available tools, you can design your court. You can rotate your view by clicking on the court and dragging your mouse around — zoom in and out with your mouse roller or the buttons at the top.

On the left side of the screen, you should see the colors of the court, which you can customize by clicking on the color swatch and choosing your favorite colors. You can also change the game line positions and dimensions.

Add Hoops

There’s a button in the middle that allows you to add hoops. Clicking multiple times will add multiple hoops.

Add a Logo

To add a logo to your court design, click “Upload Logo” at the top. A file browser will appear, allowing you to select a PNG or JPG of your image. Select the right image and click “Open.”

Your logo will automatically appear on the court in the paint section. You can change the width of the logo by adjusting the number under the Upload Logo button.

Step 4: Save Your Work

Every once in a while, click “Save” to save your work. You can create an account that will allow you to design and save multiple courts.

Step 5: Share Your Court Design With Us

After saving your court, click the “Share” button. When you click this button, a prompt will appear asking you some questions so our team can get to know you better. Then, we can get in touch to bring your design to life.

What’s Next? Choosing Your Court Surface

Whether indoor or outdoor, your court needs the right surface type. There are several different types of court surfaces to choose from, including:

Because we’re in Wisconsin, choosing concrete over asphalt is a smart idea. Concrete will last longer and is highly durable for an outdoor game court. However, concrete does come with potential for injury if someone falls.

C&C Courts Surface Recommendations

If you’re looking for durable, easy-to-repair, and easy-to-maintain outdoor game court surfaces, C&C Courts recommends PrimePlay and SportGame PB. Both of these options are safer to play on, cause less stress on the joints with patented Lateral Forgiveness, easy to replace and maintain, and very durable.

For indoor athletic court surfaces, we recommend Maple Select or US Rubber Flooring. Maple Select looks like real hardwood flooring, but with the durability and ease of repairs of plastic modular tiles. US Rubber Flooring is perfect for in-home gyms and other play areas.

Athletic Court Accessories

The right court accessories can add another level of polish to your home athletic court, provide additional safety features, and increase your court’s versatility. For example, pole padding around basketball poles can help prevent injury if someone loses control during a layup.

We also recommend ball containment fencing or ball rebounders–both of which can help save you time from chasing after errant basketballs or volleyballs.

To increase your court’s versatility, consider adding a multi-use court net, an adjustable net that raises and lowers, based on which sport you want to play.

Another essential is choosing your athletic court lighting. Proper illumination will not only allow you to play longer (on your outdoor court) but also help prevent injuries caused by inadequate lighting. LED Floodlights and solar-powered lights are perfect for outdoor courts, while portable LED worklights can work in a pinch for both indoor and outdoor courts.

And of course, always keep a first aid kit handy.

Spectator Seating Areas

Whether you’re building an indoor or outdoor court, you should consider spectator seating areas. Folding chairs, deck or patio chairs, benches, and even folding camping chairs can work to provide your spectators a place to sit. Picnic tables are great, too, for holding snacks and water bottles while providing a place to sit.

For an outdoor court, it’s easy to incorporate seating into your landscaping around the court, allowing for both a decorative element and seating for guests.
